Come September, temperatures hover around 28C, dipping to a comfortable 23C by October. While the allure of Greek islands such as Santorini and Rhodes is undeniable, they often come with a hefty price tag and are swamped with tourists, even during the shoulder season. However, mainland Greece remains an underrated treasure, boasting breath-taking landscapes and seaside delights all achievable on a budget. Travel enthusiast Em has managed to explore ten countries this year alone, spending a mere Β£2,000 in total, which averages out to just Β£200 per journey, reports the Express. On TikTok, she extolled the virtues of Athens, particularly the southern districts like Glyfada, highlighting it as an ideal economical city break. “This area has a beautiful beach and lovely cafes but also great transport links to the centre, with a direct metro or tram,” she shared.

Em suggests visiting well-known sites such as the iconic Acropolis, but also points out numerous free attractions including the Athens National Garden and Mount Lycabettus that can help trim travel expenses. “Unless you’re going to fancy restaurants, you can still find really affordable food in Athens, particularly the local Greek food like souvlaki which is delicious,” Em further advised. “You can also take a day trip from Athens to one of the nearby islands. I would recommend Aehona which is also known as the island of pistachios. It’s less than an hour on the ferry and it’s a lovely way to experience the Greek island culture without spending as much as you probably would on Mykonos or Santorini.”

Direct flights from the UK to Athens are available from several major airports, including Luton, Stansted, and London Gatwick, with fares starting at under Β£50.
